The House That AXIS Built

Employee engagement is a B2B buzz term often used to describe how motivated employees are and to rate their performance in an organization. But, employee engagement is much more than the sum of a person's performance measures. It is also about an employee's commitment to the organization and its success, as well as the employee's desire to go the extra mile to get the job done for both the company and its clients.

Creating an environment of employee engagement not only allows for high-quality performance from the employee, but also lends to peak performance for the organization. But, how is such an environment fostered?

Joseph Raymond, president of AXIS Neuromonitoring in Richardson, Texas, knows how.

"By creating a workplace in which the right conditions for all members are in place, each team member is able to give their best each day," Raymond said.

To foster engagement at AXIS, Raymond and the AXIS Neuromonitoring leadership team have worked to establish an atmosphere that keeps the tenets of appreciation, communication, feedback, information, encouragement and training at the forefront of their daily operations.

"We believe that to attract and retain quality employees in house and in the operating room, it is necessary to make them feel appreciated," Raymond said.

Appreciation includes acknowledging successes and contributions, as well as thanking team members for a job well done.

"Recognizing employees allows them to realize what they do is critical to our overall success," Raymond said.

In addition to recognizing employee contributions, the AXIS leadership team believes that employees should also be given a chance to feel as if their voices are heard.

"It is important to listen to staff to gauge the pulse of what is happening within the organization," Raymond said.

Communication is a two-way street, which means leadership and management need to be able to give feedback to staff as well. This allows a give-and-take approach that helps employees feel as if their contribution has a direct impact on the company.

"To ensure our client hospitals and surgeons, and ultimately their client patients, are receiving the very best service from us, we need to be able to coach constructively," Raymond said.

AXIS also believes in sharing information and updates with its team members and clients.

"When we participate in a study or see success with a new modality or receive an award, we like to share that information. It helps to foster the feeling that we've all achieved something, and we are all involved," Raymond said.

AXIS also goes a step beyond many IONM companies by offering continuing education, licensing and development opportunities.

"We are constantly working to improve service, so that means making sure our technologists are highly trained and receive continued training during their employment with us," Raymond said.

AXIS Neuromonitoring has an internal set of best practices it uses in every operating room to ensure it is providing high-quality care during every surgery.

"We maintain clinical guidelines that are among the highest level in the industry," Raymond said.

All technologists working at AXIS Neuromonitoring are members of the American Society of Neurophysiological Monitoring (ASNM) and the Neurodiagnostic Society (ASET). AXIS technologists are also either board certified or working on their certification.

In addition to being certified, AXIS has built its own in-house training program.

"We require our employees to go further and learn more," Raymond said.
